What are the 7 basic dog commands?

Training a dog effectively requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. The basic commands that you can teach your dog is to help establish good manners and a strong bond between you and your dog.

1. Sit

This is a basic command that is useful in many situations. To teach your dog to sit, hold a treat in front of their nose and move it up and over their head. As they follow the treat with their nose, their hind end should naturally lower to the ground. As soon as they sit, say "sit" and give them the treat.

2. Down

This command can be useful in situations where you want your dog to calm down or lie down in a specific place. To teach your dog to lie down, start by getting them to sit. Then, hold a treat in front of their nose and move it slowly down to the ground. As they follow the treat, their front end should lower to the ground. As soon as they lie down, say "down" and give them the treat.

3. Stay

This command is useful for keeping your dog in one place, especially in potentially hazardous situations. To teach your dog to stay, start by getting them to sit or lie down. Then, hold your hand out in front of you with your palm facing your dog and say "stay." Take a step back, then return to your dog and give them a treat if they stayed in place.

4. Come

This command is important for recalling your dog to you when they are off-leash or in a potentially dangerous situation. To teach your dog to come, start by getting their attention with a treat or toy. Then, say "come" and encourage them to come to you with the treat or toy. As they come to you, say "good come" and give them the treat or toy.

5. Leave it

This command is useful for teaching your dog to ignore potentially dangerous or inappropriate items. To teach your dog to leave it, hold a treat in your closed fist and say "leave it." If your dog tries to take the treat, close your fist tighter and say "leave it" again. When your dog stops trying to get the treat, say "good leave it" and give them a treat from your other hand.

6. Drop it

This command is useful for getting your dog to release an object that they have in their mouth. To teach your dog to drop it, offer them a treat and say "drop it." When they release the object, say "good drop it" and give them the treat.

7. Heel

This command is useful for keeping your dog close to you while on a leash. To teach your dog to heel, start by standing next to them on their left side with the leash in your left hand. Say "heel" and take a step forward, gently pulling on the leash to encourage them to follow you. When they follow you, say "good heel" and give them a treat.

It's important to remember that training a dog takes time and patience. Be consistent in your commands and rewards, and always use positive reinforcement to encourage good behaviour.
